Holy Family Catholic Church is located on the northern edge of Little Falls, MN in Belle Prairie Township. We are the oldest parish in the Diocese of St. Cloud and our French-Canadian roots date back to the North American fur trading era of the 1850’s.
Holy Family Church, the oldest parish in the Diocese of St. Cloud, dates back to the days of French-Canadian fur traders. In 1838, Father Lafleche of Three Rivers, Quebec, said Mass in Belle Prairie area and established a mission called Lacroix and the mission at Belle Prairie was established shortly after that, Lacroix, the French word for “The Cross”. Father Francis Xavier Pierz arrived in the area in 1852, thus laying the foundation of the first parish in the Diocese of St. Cloud. In 1853 he celebrated Mass in the Martin Bisson home located 1/4 of a mile south of the Belle Prairie Rapids. In 1855 a small log chapel was erected in the area that is now the parish cemetery. In the 1856 issue of the Metropolitan Catholic Almanac it mentions that Father Pierz of St. Andrew’s Church at Belle Prairie was the priest in charge of 300 French-Canadian members. In June of 1861 the Martin Bisson family gave a portion of land to the church. This is now the site of
In 1877 Father Joseph Buh and parishioners started building Holy Family Church. Farmers hauled the stone needed for the construction from the rapids of the nearby Mississippi

In 1999, while in the process of tearing down the old entry for the beginning of Project 2000, a sheaf of papers was discovered that had been written by “Pere LeMay” dated 1886. Some of the papers are displayed behind glass in the basement stairway. A summary of what the papers contain is as follows:

In 1872, Elizabeth Hayes, a young English woman, came to the American Frontier in Minnesota as Mother Mary Ignatius of Jesus and in 1873 built a convent and school near the Mississippi River in Belle Prairie. Her order, the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, is the only religious congregation ever founded with the boundaries of the St. Cloud Diocese. The Missionary Franciscans opened a school for young girls called St. Anthony’s on January 1, 1873. A convent followed and by 1876 she had 8 Novices in her order. The convent burned on April 26, 1889, and the sisters left Belle Prairie. Some of the sisters returned to the east coast. Others, including Sister Mary Francis Beauchamp, located in Little Falls and established the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. Eventually the Missionary Franciscans returned to Belle Prairie and Mother Mary Columba (daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elzear Doucet, later spelled Doucette) opened Our Lady of the Angels Academy on November 11, 1911.
Two wings were added to the building in 1930. A gymnasium was built in 1950 and in 1964 a new high school was erected. During the summer of 1969, the Franciscan Sisters left. With the help of the Diocese, the parish purchased the school property. In 1999, the property was sold to Central Minnesota Tec. At the present time, the parish continues to rent the new High School building for Faith Formation and other parish functions. TEC sold the Academy to Metro Plains Development in 2005. It has been converted in 24 beautiful apartments. The renovation was completed in December of 2006. The Academy is now called Riverwood Pines Apartments.
